Mentoring in Extension

The goal of Mentoring in Extension is to provide a professional, educational and personal support system for new employees of Texas Agrilife Extension Service and the Cooperative Extension Program at Prairie View A&M University.

The development of each new employee and certain newly-promoted employees is provided through a partnership that includes: the immediate supervisor, the regional program director, co-workers and an assigned "formal" mentor. In essence all partners are "mentors" in helping the new employee to become an integral part of Texas Extension.

Mentoring relationships are well documented in nurturing a sense of loyalty and commitment to one's profession. The role of a mentor should be perceived as a nurturer who has strong respect and concern for the mentee. The major contribution made by the mentor is his/her willingness to devote time and energy on behalf of the mentee. Every mentor has a specific body of professional knowledge and skills to share. The knowledge that the mentor has must be transformed into a package that will meet the mentee's maturity and experience level.

The Mentoring in Extension Guidebook provides details on how all of the partners work together and the roles that each play in the devleopment of our new employees.
